COMPARISON OF ANALYTICAL AND NUMERICAL APPROACHES FOR SIMULATING GROUNDWATER FLOW TO MULTI SCREEN WELLS

Full text

Abstract:

Groundwater is frequently abstracted from wells with several screens or partially penetrating the aquifer. Such wells play significant role in groundwater production, drainage or remediation. The determination of the hydraulic behavior of wells, which are open to more than one depth zone or have short screen, is rather difficult. In this comparative study, different analytical and numerical methods are reviewed and compared to give a clear idea about the accuracy and reliability of the well-known Multi-Node Well (MNW) package for the widely used USGS code MODFLOW. The obtained results provedthat the MNW package can provide acceptable and accurate simulations even in certain particularhydraulic situations. On the other hand the case-study examples also confirmed that the MNW Packagecannot be recommended for short-term transient simulations because of approximation error.
